Bali landmarks: temples, rice terraces, waterfalls

The main places in Bali by area, temples, rice terraces, waterfalls and viewpoints, what is reachable from Canggu, Ubud and Uluwatu, and what to plan for the drive.

Bali is small on a map, but trips here are measured in hours rather than kilometres: Canggu and Ubud are about 30 km apart, roughly half an hour in light traffic and noticeably longer in the daytime rush. It is easier to build a plan around the villa you stay in than around a single long list of sights.

In this section we cover the main places on the island: temples on cliffs and by the water, rice terraces, waterfalls, the volcano and viewpoints. For each group we explain which area it is easiest to reach from, where the road goes and what to take along.

A word about temples: these are working places of worship, not attractions. A sarong below the knee and covered shoulders are required before entry, a sash is added in the inner courtyard, and shoes come off where staff ask. During a ceremony visitors stay in the outer courtyard.
