Bali areas beyond Canggu and Ubud: Berawa, Pererenan, Kedungu, Sanur

In short. Canggu, Ubud and Uluwatu have their own guide. This one covers the areas people pick less often but often more precisely: Berawa and Pererenan next to Canggu but quieter, Kedungu in the west for a calm ocean, Sanur in the east with flat water and the boat harbour, and the southern Bukit for sunsets. The airport sits in the south, so how close you are to it differs a lot between areas, and that is worth planning around.

Berawa

Berawa is the strip between Canggu and Seminyak. The advantage: cafés, restaurants and beach clubs are within walking distance rather than a drive. The drawback is the same thing: traffic is dense and in the evening you hear music from neighbouring venues. It suits people who want to be in the middle of things and do not mind the noise.

Pererenan

Pererenan continues Canggu to the north-west. Streets are calmer, buildings lower, and rice fields appear between the villas more often. The surf and the cafés of Canggu are still a few minutes away on a scooter. A good choice if you want quiet without leaving the infrastructure behind.

Kedungu

Kedungu sits west of Tanah Lot, on a black volcanic sand beach. The area is noticeably calmer than the south: few hotels, narrow roads through villages, the ocean below the cliffs. It suits people who come for quiet and accept that larger restaurants and shops mean a drive.

Sanur

Sanur is on the east of the island. The bottom is flat and the water behind the reef is calm, which is why families and long-stay visitors often choose it. The fast boats to Nusa Penida, Lembongan and the Gili islands leave from here too, and the airport is closer than from Canggu or the Bukit.

The southern Bukit and Uluwatu

The south of the peninsula is cliffs, ocean and sunsets. The beaches sit below, reached by stairs, the water is open and often has a strong current. This area is for people who want the view and the surf, and accept that getting anywhere means driving.

How to choose

• Walk everywhere and live in the thick of it: Berawa, Seminyak.
• Quiet, but next to the infrastructure: Pererenan.
• A calm ocean and village feel: Kedungu.
• Travelling with children or staying long: Sanur.
• In it for the view, sunsets and surf: Uluwatu and the southern Bukit.

The airport is in the south of the island, so Sanur and Kuta are the closest, Canggu, Berawa and the Bukit are a longer drive, and Ubud and Kedungu are the furthest of all. Travel time depends heavily on traffic, so we always check the road before a trip.
