Opening a Bank Account in Bali as a Foreigner: Documents, Banks and Online Payments
Short answer: a foreigner opens a full bank account in Indonesia with a passport plus a stay permit. With a KITAS, KITAP or Golden Visa the process is routine and at some banks can be completed inside the mobile app. On a tourist visa or visa on arrival a permanent account is normally out of reach, so you rely on your home card, cash and QRIS payments if your own payment app is linked to the Indonesian system.
Three situations
- You live here on a KITAS, KITAP or Golden Visa. The bank sees a legal stay permit and opens an ordinary rupiah savings account with a debit card and app access.
- You are here for a month or two on a tourist visa or visa on arrival. A permanent account is almost always closed to you. What works: your home card, ATM withdrawals, and QRIS payments from your home app if your country is on Bank Indonesia's partner list.
- You live here but your permit expires soon. Banks check validity, and a stay permit with only a couple of months left can get the application refused. Renew first, then walk into the branch.
Documents banks ask for
The package is similar across the big banks, with small differences.
- Passport, original, with a valid visa or entry stamp.
- Stay permit card: KITAS or KITAP. BCA states it plainly in the requirements for its Tahapan savings account: passport for a foreigner, plus a KITAS or KITAP for a foreigner residing in Indonesia. For a foreigner who does not reside in Indonesia, BCA accepts other documents under the anti money laundering guidelines (APU, PPT dan PPPSPM).
- An address in Bali. In practice a villa or house lease contract, or at least an address you can confirm.
- A local phone number. Without it the SMS codes never arrive, and the banking app binds to a number. Buy a local SIM on day one.
- A tax residency self certification. The bank hands you a form: it needs your country of tax residence for financial information exchange rules.
- Business owners add a NIB and company documents, but that is a corporate account and a separate procedure.
Which banks
The large universal banks with branches in Bali are BCA, Mandiri, BNI, BRI, CIMB Niaga, Permata and Danamon. Base conditions do not differ much, so people pick on app quality, ATM network and how smoothly the branch handles a foreign passport.
- Mandiri opens accounts online through the Livin app. Its published rules say a foreigner residing in Indonesia may open an account with a passport and an ITAS, ITAP or Golden Visa issued by the immigration directorate. This is the fastest route when the paperwork is in order.
- BCA does not open accounts for foreigners in the app; you visit a branch with passport and stay permit. Branches exist in Canggu, Seminyak, Ubud and Denpasar, and the procedure is well worn.
- BNI, BRI, CIMB Niaga and Permata follow the same identification rules, but minimum balances and document packages shift more often than at the two largest banks, so confirm locally.
What it costs to keep the account
BCA's published tariff for the Tahapan savings account, in rupiah:
- minimum opening deposit 500,000;
- minimum retained balance 50,000, monthly average balance 100,000;
- monthly fee 14,000 on a GPN Blue card, 16,000 on GPN Gold, 19,000 on GPN Platinum, and 1,000 more on the Mastercard versions;
- a 5,000 penalty if the monthly average balance stays below 100,000;
- account closure 50,000;
- transfer to another bank: 6,500 online, or 2,500 over BI-FAST.
Those are the bank's own numbers and they are the real cost of the account. Mandiri and BNI price it differently, but the logic is the same: a card fee, a minimum balance requirement, and a separate charge for interbank transfers.
Transfers, limits and the app
Limits are not fixed. In the banking app they are configured per channel, meaning separately for card use, transfers within the bank and transfers to other banks. The default is lower than what you may need when paying rent, and you raise it in the app or at the branch.
Transfers between Indonesian banks run over BI-FAST, which is cheaper than the older clearing network. Sending money abroad is a separate service, priced higher, and it requires a stated purpose of payment plus source of funds documents for larger amounts.
One practical point: most villa owners and developers bank with BCA or Mandiri. A transfer inside the same bank is free, so ask for the account details in advance and skip paying interbank fees for no reason.
Online payments without a local account
Indonesia has moved to QR payments, and that changes the picture for a visitor.
As of August 2026, according to Bank Indonesia, the cross border QRIS network is live with six countries: Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Japan, South Korea and China. A visitor from one of them pays at a warung or a shop with their own payment app by scanning the local QR code, and the money leaves their home account. Links with Timor-Leste and Hong Kong were still in development on the same date. Bank Indonesia puts corridor coverage at roughly 40 percent of inbound arrivals, which means visitors from Australia and several other markets have no direct scheme yet; for them Bank Indonesia promotes the Indonesia Travel Pack.
Living in Bali on a KITAS makes this simpler: the local account comes with a GPN or Mastercard debit card that works online, and domestic QRIS runs from the banking app.
Before you move, check three things with your own bank: the fee for transactions in Indonesia, the exchange rate it applies, and whether it freezes the card at the first foreign transactions. Anti fraud freezes in the first month in Bali are common, and clearing one with support takes time.
Common mistakes
- Walking into a branch with an expiring stay permit. Renew first, then go.
- Expecting an account with nothing but a passport. Without a stay permit a bank will only offer what its internal rules allow, and that is not a full account.
- Forgetting the local SIM. The banking app will not activate without a local number.
- Keeping a year of expenses in rupiah. The rate moves and an ordinary savings account pays very little.
- Paying rent in cash with no receipt. A bank account leaves a trail, and it helps in a deposit dispute.
Bottom line
A Bali bank account runs on a passport plus a stay permit: KITAS, KITAP or Golden Visa. The quickest path is a bank that takes the application in its app, such as Mandiri, while a single branch visit to BCA gets it done too. Keeping the account is cheap: 500,000 rupiah to open, from 14,000 a month, transfers from 2,500. Without a stay permit there is no permanent account, but you can still pay in warungs and shops by QRIS from your home app if your country is on the Bank Indonesia partner list.
