Bali Rainy Season: When It Starts, What Changes Day to Day, and How to Pick a Villa
Short answer: the Bali wet season runs roughly from November to March, and it is not a month of constant downpour. Rain usually arrives in bursts, most often in the afternoon, while mornings and evenings stay dry. You can live, work and get around the island in this season, but the villa has to meet four specific requirements: drainage on the plot, the condition of the roof, ventilation in the bedroom, and road access. Those four things, not the rain itself, decide whether you are comfortable.
When it starts and how long it lasts
Bali has two seasons: dry roughly from April to October, wet from November to March. Exact dates shift from year to year, so the meteorological service forecast matters more than the calendar.
According to BMKG (press release of 22 September 2026), the 2026-2027 wet season arrives later than usual and will be shorter. The reason is stated plainly: a very strong El Niño combined with a positive Indian Ocean Dipole, which reduces rainfall and stretches the dry spell. By region, part of Bali enters the wet season in November 2026 and most of the island in December. The rainfall peak in central Bali is forecast for January 2027. The Denpasar city administration, citing the same forecast, says the season will last about four months, through April 2027.
What that means in practice: November and the first half of December may be almost dry, with the bulk of the rain arriving in January and February. Planning a move or a holiday on long-term averages is a bad idea in a year like this.
What actually changes day to day
- Humidity. The real discomfort of the season is not rain but air at close to 90 percent humidity. Laundry takes days to dry, leather goods and shoes grow mould within a week, and wardrobes start to smell musty.
- Mould indoors. It appears on walls behind furniture, on bathroom ceilings, in pillows. A closed bedroom with no air conditioning and no airflow is the first place it takes hold.
- Mosquitoes. Standing water in drains, barrels and puddles gives them breeding sites. Dengue cases rise in the wet season, so repellent and window screens are not a formality.
- Power and water. Short outages and voltage dips are more common than in the dry season. A well turning cloudy after heavy rain is normal too, and tap water in Bali should not be drunk in any season.
- Internet. Thunderstorms drop connections, and providers have interruptions at base stations. If you work remotely, a mobile connection as backup is mandatory.
- Roads. Parts of Canggu and Berawa flood after heavy rain and the water takes time to drain. A villa down a dirt track or through a low spot can become impassable for an hour or two, and on a scooter that is dangerous as well.
What to check when choosing a villa
The wet season tests a house better than any inspector and exposes in a couple of months everything the dry season hid. Before signing, look at this:
- Roof and ceiling. Fresh stains, water marks or bubbling paint on an upper ceiling mean leaks. Ask when the roof was replaced and the gutters last cleaned.
- Drainage on the plot. Where does water go from the terrace and the pool, are there storm drains, does water pool against the foundation. A villa in a low spot next to a rice field is the riskiest option.
- Ventilation and air conditioning. Bedrooms need working air conditioning or ceiling fans, and bathrooms need an extractor or a window. A house with no air movement will have mould by the end of the first month.
- Furniture and storage. Wardrobes pushed flat against a wall and closed cabinets breed mould. Ask whether there is a dehumidifier and look at the mattresses and pillows.
- Laundry drying. A covered drying rack or a tumble dryer changes daily life in this season. Confirm which one the villa has.
- Access road. Drive to the villa in the rain or straight after it: asphalt, concrete or dirt, is there a low point where water collects, can a car turn around.
- Mosquito control. Window screens, whether the plot is treated, and whether there are barrels or containers holding standing water.
Renting and prices in the wet season
For holiday rentals this is the low season: demand drops, choice widens and owners are willing to negotiate. A current-season guide: nightly discounts are widest in January and February, except the holiday weeks around New Year and Chinese New Year, when prices climb again. On a longer stay of three months or more it is easier in this period to agree on price and a softer payment schedule, because a villa sitting empty through the rains costs the owner money.
For actual catalogue rates, here is the current table:
| Area | Listings | Price per month |
|---|---|---|
| Ubud | 3 | $ 2 200 - $ 9 640 |
| Canggu | 7 | $ 2 240 - $ 6 060 |
| Seminyak | 1 | $ 3 030 |

Getting around and what to wear
- A rain jacket beats an umbrella. On a scooter an umbrella is useless, while a rain jacket and a full-face helmet solve it in a minute.
- Brake earlier. Wet asphalt and road markings are slippery, especially in corners and on the tiles at a villa gate.
- Do not ride through water you cannot see the bottom of. A flooded stretch can hide an open drain or a pothole.
- Footwear and gear. Rubber sandals, a waterproof phone pouch and a dry bag for the laptop cost less than the repairs.
- Plan around the mornings. Rain mostly comes in the afternoon, so trips, villa viewings and bank errands belong before lunch.
Bottom line
The Bali wet season is no reason to cancel a trip or a move, but it is a reason to choose the house more carefully. BMKG forecasts the 2026-2027 season to start later, in November or December, and to run shorter than usual with a January peak. Day to day the issue is humidity, mould, mosquitoes and roads, so check the roof, drainage, ventilation and access before you sign.
