Surfing in Bali: Which Areas Work and Where to Stay
Short answer: beginners do best in Canggu, Berawa and Kedungu, where the bottom is sand and the waves are forgiving; experienced surfers head to Uluwatu for reef breaks with real power; Sanur suits easy water entry and kitesurfing. The area matters more than the villa itself: you want 5-15 minutes to the break, otherwise early dawn sessions stop happening after the first week.
Canggu and Berawa: schools and long rides
Canggu and neighbouring Berawa are the base camp for learning. Batu Bolong offers mellow waves over sand, with surf schools and board rental right on the beach. Echo Beach works on a different tide: the wave is steeper and faster, that is where people go once they can stand reliably. Berawa Beach is usually softer with an easier entry and a shorter queue in the water.
The advantage is that cafes, shops and services sit between sessions, and the evening needs no driving. The downside is dry-season crowding, popular peaks mean waiting your turn. Pick a villa 5-10 minutes on foot or by scooter from the beach, so a sunrise paddle is not a commute.
Uluwatu: reef and an intermediate-to-advanced level
Uluwatu is for confident surfers. The breaks here are reef: Padang Padang, Bingin, Suluban, Balangan, Nyang Nyang. The bottom is sharp rock, the wave has power, the tide changes everything, and several spots require stairs and a long walk down. A beginner without an instructor does not belong here, but the surfing and the scenery are among the best on the island.
Uluwatu villas sit on the cliffs, often with ocean views, though the water is not always walkable: 10-20 minutes by scooter is typical. If surfing is the main purpose of the trip, ask us for the distance to a specific break, not to the centre of the area.
Kedungu: quieter, cheaper, mid-level friendly
Kedungu, near Tanah Lot, has become the calm alternative to Canggu. The beach break there is often at its best for intermediate surfers, the water and sand are less crowded, and rents run lower than in Canggu or Seminyak. Current season reference: the difference is noticeable, especially on monthly stays, check listing cards or ask us for exact rates.
The trade-off is distance to other breaks and thinner infrastructure. For a family that surfs in the morning and wants quiet the rest of the day, it is a sensible compromise.
Seminyak and Sanur: easier entry, different water
Seminyak and Kuta deliver beach breaks without reef, but the dry season brings wind and crowds, and rides are shorter than in Canggu. Sanur on the east coast is a calm lagoon with the reef far out, one of the island's best spots for kitesurfing and SUP, with flatter water. For classic surfing, Sanur suits first-timers and anyone who wants to mix water time with long promenade walks.
Season and tide matter more than the spot
The dry season, roughly April to October, brings consistent waves on the west and south coast, Canggu, Berawa, Uluwatu, Kedungu, plus winds that keep the surface clean. In the wet season, November to March, the wind shifts, west-coast water is often murkier and the wave messy, while the east coast, Keramas and Sanur, works better. Tide reshapes reef breaks completely: the same spot can suit different levels in the morning and the evening, so read a tide table instead of trusting habit.
Choosing a villa for surfing
Check three things: distance to the break on the real road, storage for a board and wet gear (closet, drying rack, outdoor shower), and reliable internet if you work after the morning session. If you need the catalogue price table, insert the line
| Area | Listings | Price per month |
|---|---|---|
| Ubud | 3 | $ 2 200 - $ 9 640 |
| Canggu | 7 | $ 2 240 - $ 6 060 |
| Seminyak | 1 | $ 3 030 |
