Massage and spa in Bali: types, salons and massage at the villa
In short. Massage in Bali is part of an ordinary day rather than a separate outing: every tourist area has salons, from seaside places to hotel spas. There are three main kinds: gentle Balinese massage with oils, deeper work on the muscles after surfing, and long spa programmes with a flower bath.
How the types differ
Balinese massage is oils, long strokes and kneading at a calm tempo. Deeper work on the muscles is what you want after surfing, long hikes or desk work: more pressure, more targeted areas. Spa programmes run in blocks of two or three hours: scrub, wrap, flower bath, sometimes tea or a meal at the end.

How it connects to the area
In Ubud people tend to book longer programmes and body work: there it is part of the routine for people staying several weeks. By the ocean, in Canggu and Seminyak, a short session after surfing or before dinner is more usual. When nobody wants to drive after a long trip, the massage comes to the villa: the therapist brings oil, a table and towels, and you need to clear the space in advance.
What to ask before the session
- Which oil is used and whether you are allergic to it.
- How strong the pressure will be and whether it can be adjusted as you go.
- How long the session actually runs, not what the price list says.
- Whether the therapist has experience with injuries and with backs.
Costs depend on the area and the season, so we do not publish prices: they are confirmed when you book.
